Metrahit 18C - What is it worth
« on: January 31, 2019, 06:55:20 pm »
Hey,
my name is Luca and I´m from Germany :)

I just recently found a Metrahit 18C calibrator in our basement and I can´t find any valuable information about its value on the internet.
I have a calibration protocol from 1999 and does not look like anyone has used it in the past decade or so.
As I have no use for it, I want to sell it but I absolutely have no idea what its worth. I made an eBay listing for 179€ but got only one low offer so far.
I am sure some of you are more informed than I am :D

Greetings,
Luca  :-+

The amazing thing about eBay is that you can start with a low price and let people bid.

The price will automatically rise to the true value!

I know...
but due to bad experiences and me not knowing how big the market for such a device is, I would prefer not to do an auction.
I can still be worth something even if not many people are interested because it is not a tool for common use. So I think there is a high risk with auctions not reaching the items worth.

Could you ask the original owner of the device about it? I assume it didn't just grow in your basement? :)

Sadly not possible. :(

My father got it almost a decade because it is was no longer needed but never used it. My father does not work there anymore and has no contact with the people that gave him the device, because they too moved to different jobs.

The only thing I know is that it cost 2000DM so about 1000€ in 1998. The newer generation calibrator from Metrahit is about 1150€ atm.

IMHO 179 Euros is a fair price for the unit. The current calibrator from Metrahit costs around 1.300,- with VAT.
But usually mostly companies buy these units. They don't care about VAT and usually need a calibration certificate, which is included in a new unit. Therefore I don't think you get much more than the already asked price. And it will take some time to find a buyer.

Only companies and professionals purchase these calibrators when new because they need the reliability and calibration certificate.
after a number of years perhaps 3-5 they get replaced and the old ones are traded in or given away to employees.
For the hobbyist they are of limited use and therefore second hand prices are anyone's guess.

If it works ok I will start the bidding at 20 euros.  :)

Okay, thank you very much. I'm glad that my original estimate is not that bad. Then I will continue my offer at this price.

Sadly I was just offered 150€ so I think I need to decline your offer :)

150€ isn't too bad for something you found, something that might be worth 179€ - if you can find the right buyer.

Take the 150€ and be happy.
