A clunky or slow UI suggests that the people building the scope either didn't have a lot of experience with scopes in general, didn't have the budget or time to do the job right, or just plain didn't care.

That is true, and it's probably the reason why the old analog Tek scopes were so great, because the guys that used them designed them. I'd venture a guess that the UI and software is probably done by software peeps who don't use a scope on a daily basis.

UI responsiveness also figured into the design of the early Tektronix DSOs.  In an analog oscilloscope this is free but they must have been aware of the issue because they made a special effort to decouple the user interface processing from the waveform processing including adding extra hardware so the former is not limited by the later.  You see it in things like a trace immediately moving in response to the position control instead of waiting for a new acquisition record.

The WordStar word processor did something similar in the age when it was run using a terminal connected to a computer via a slow RS-232 serial interface.  Keyboard commands and typing would interrupt the screen refresh process to preserve low interactive latency and the screen was refreshed in a non-linear way so that the point where the user's attention is focused is refreshed first.

In Australia you can now write off the entire cost of any asset $20k in the first year  :-+
When they announced that, car companies started mysteriously selling utes with contract values of $19,999

Ok, this is the second time I have noticed this so I have to ask.

I bet this was supposed to be a link to clip to a quote from "My Cousin Vinny", where the judge asks "Did you say Ute? What's a Ute?"

It was and the link to the image was there when I checked after posting but between then and when Dave responded, the image was deleted from the forum.

I can't believe there aren't any leaked photos or datasheets etc for this.
Usually suppliers or news outlets slip up etc and stuff is searchable beforehand.
Anyone know what model number the new series is called?

There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

Not sure if this is already known but the source code on the Tek webpage refers to the new scope as the "5 series"

It will probably have a touchscreen so it doesn't need those buttons anyway. My newest scope doesn't even have buttons and yet it is very easy to operate using the touchscreen.

<cynic> For some reason I can't help thinking of those films that they don't let reviewers see in advance, which generally isn't because they expect good reviews..
</cynic>
But who knows the twisted logic of the marketing agency - they probably just want to get maximum press impact, and justify their outrageous marketing budget.
Other companies just give the kit to reviewers with the confidence that the product will speak for itself.

I don't know one way or the other, or care: I saved and spent for a 1054z so I'm not getting my hands on any shiny new stuff soon.

But if you're going to announce just another new scope (say, one that is based on all existing technology/asics/paradigms), you're right. But if you're going to make something really different (like someone suggested in this or another thread, that they are using something like nvidia parts or GPUs), then you probably wouldn't want to be sending them to reviewers.

But I think you're spot on re: marketing budgets, and why not. All departments justify themselves like that.

When you have 8 channels that's not possible.

Word on the street is that it is indeed the "5 series".
Models MSO54, MSO56, and MSO58. Strange move to two digit model numbers if that's correct.
Entry level price is supposed to be in the low $10k range, with an unusual 6.25 GS/s sample rate. New custom ADC perhaps?
I would presume 2GHz hardware on all models with software license based bandwidth?

I hope some poor knob fanboy at the end of his thread makes a 8-knob external control panel both to piss you off and continue playing with knobs.

Well the way that people bag the MDO's here whilst completely ignoring the spectrum analyser feature as an added benefit, perhaps they don't want a repeat of that by the Tek bashers before the scope has even had a chance to get off the ground  !!

https://www.eximpulse.com/export-product-oscilloscope.htm
Search for MSO58

US$4,460 declared value for the 1GHz MSO58

That wouldn't be retail though of course, and I'm not sure if this is legit or not because it dates from the 8th Nov 2016 from India to Portland. So, meh.

And another two going from India to Australia in Nov as well:

Tek's warranty page at http://www.tek.com/mytek_warranty_status has MSO54, MSO56 and MSO58 in its 'Model Name' field, so those are probably the correct model names. :-+

I think you nailed it as one of those exports is labeled "ELEMENTAL PROTOTYPE"

Bingo  ;D

Hmm.  I had no idea those forms were public.  That's a prime source of business intel.
