Rigol DS1054z + DG1022 or DS1074z-S?
« on: January 26, 2015, 03:37:26 pm »
I'm one of the folks lined up for a DS1054z scope but I'd also like a function generator. Should I get the all in one DS1074z-S or a DS1054z+DG1022 for about $100 less?

Go separates and just hack the DS1054Z if you need the 70+ MHz. Much easier to change settings when you have dedicated screen + knobs for each function!

Generally, yes, separate units. I bought my MSO1074Z-S for field use, so for me it's really convenient to have it all in one small package. But for lab use, separate.

FWIW, apart from differences in functionality, the -S models have the sig gen outputs at the back, and accessing the functionality from an already cluttered menu is less than smooth.

Thanks everyone, that made it clear. Now Rigol DS1022 or Siglent SGD1025?

I went for the SDG1025 because of the better specs and recommendations here. But it turns out that it might have a problem with log sweep. It is not a deal breaker for many and not for you too perhaps.

+1 on the SDG1025, although I haven't verified the "log sweep" issue on mine. It had the best bang/buck for me.

On the original topic, I'm not really big on multi-function devices as they're usually a compromise of some sort.

OP
There are a lot of SDG1000 series units "out there", enough to have their own thread:
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/the-sdg1000-and-sdg800-thread/
There is much information in that thread along with enhancements devised by owners.

The Log Sweep has been problematic in it's implementation, with several recent firmware updates to get it exactly right.
The latest concerns are for a usuage with a quite fast sweep, otherwise it works as intended.
