Marconi TF 2023 Signal generator

Hi Peeps.  Grumpydoc posted his modifications to the TF 2023 Signal generator.   I purchased the Winstar SC15029 display fitted and made the DC supply module as directed.  However, Grumpydocs photo of the 20 Pin IDE ribbon to 20 pin single in line connector shows one or two wires crossed over, it is not clear  from an enlarged photo  how and why.  I soldered pin for pin as in 1 to 1 2 to 2 etc, leaving pin / wire 9 open. as pin 9 on the 20 pin in line is missing.
 
Also I have looked in the Settings of the manual, and I cannot find a code to set the LCD Contrast.  It has been mentioned.

 In the Winstar data sheet it also shows a 20K Pot attached to Wire 9 "VO".  Suggesting this wire 9 should be connected but the bottom of the preset is to VEE ??
Please can some forum member advise.
