E4411B vs 8591C
« on: September 02, 2021, 07:33:12 pm »
I currently have both of these spectrum analysers

Agilent E4411B ESA-L, 50ohm, 9khz - 1.5GHz, no options
HP 8591C, 75ohm, 1MHz - 1.8GHz, Tracking generator, and narrow bandwidth option.

I'm thinking of letting one go and keeping other, but which one to keep ?

I'm leaning towards keeping the 8591C, yes it is old, has BNC's rather than N-Types, and 75ohm (although 50ohm can be selected in the menu). On the upside it does have a tracking generator and narrow bandwidth option.

The ESA is newer, but it is pretty basic, and I'm not sure it's built as well as the older HP analyser.

Of course I could get rid of both and buy something else with the proceeds ?

First thing people will ask you here:

What are your needs?
What do you do with them?
The 8591C being 75ohms and not 50 is not a problem for you? The impedance matcher does not bother you?

They are just used for general purpose at the moment, and maybe some HF/VHF HAM radio work.

50ohm can be selected in the menu, I don't think this changes the physical termination. Rather it calculates the correct reading for 50ohm.

I was just curious to see what people thought of these two analysers and which was a better one to keep.
