looking for tek 2216 service manual and schematics
« on: March 03, 2019, 10:39:25 pm »
I recently picked up a rack-mounted 2216 in pristine condition. While I found the (328 page!) user manual, I haven't been able to locate a service manual or schematics in any of the usual places.  Does anyone have a set or know where I can find one?

It does. The scope has the feel of a lot of transitional analog to digital equipment. It is high performance with a clunky interface. I am not surprised that Tek didn't make very many of them. I am surprised how hard it is to find a service manual!  Doesn't bode well if I need parts, as I probably do.

Thanks for the pointer to the tek email list. If Artek doesn't have it, it probably doesn't exist. *sigh*  Will keep looking...

When looking at a used scope first thing I check is the availability of a good Service Manual with readable schematics. Actually this goes for any vintage T&M gear.

I do, too. I usually have every available bit of documentation I can find in hand before I consider buying used or vintage gear of whatever kind, unless I am buying it for parts. I got ahead of myself on this one, though. Worst case, I can use the 2216 until it fails in some way I can't figure out and then that will be that.

On the other hand, I am sort of enjoying trying to ferret out the documentation. Appeals to my OCD, I guess.

If you keep talking about it here long enough you might find so one familiar with it enough to say "well the power supply is very close to a 22XX" and so on, and be able to assemble some data piecemeal. I have a 2225 with both manuals if that might be of any use someday.

Thanks for the offer. I am digging around. The 2212 and 2216 were designed at the same time and don't seem to have much in common with the other 22xx scopes. They were the only ones in the line (I think) designed at Tektronix Holland. There's a service manual for the 2212 without schematics on the tek wiki and it looks like qservice has a 2212 manual with schematics. I am going to look at the free one first and see how it matches up with my 2216.

It's been fun in the sense that my queries have generated a couple of good conversations and I do love a good mystery.  ;)

The 2 channel 22xx oscilloscopes are not all the same series:

2213/2215   1982   Triac Preregulator, Wafer Switches, 30pF Inputs
2235 Series   1984   Switching Preregulator, Cam Switches, 20pF Inputs
2225 Series   1987   50/60Hz Transformer Isolated, Wafer and Slide Switches, 25pF Inputs, Alt Mag

2214   1991   25pF Inputs, Alt Mag
2212   1993   20pF Inputs, Alt Mag, 50/60Hz Transformer Isolated
2216   1995   20pF Inputs, Alt Mag

The 50/60Hz transformer isolation and alternate magnification support on the 2212 suggests to me that the 2212, 2214, and 2216 are closests to the 2225.
