GW Instek GDS-2000E series bugs and other issues list
« on: November 29, 2018, 02:28:25 pm »
The purpose of this thread is to document bugs in the FW on the various versions, the GDS, MDO and MSO.

I am primarily using an MSO-2204EA for this, but have a GDS-2072E available also.

Good Will are remarkably diligent in addressing problems.  So I'm reserving space at the start of the thread to make it easy to keep track of what's been fixed and what has not.  I am documenting issues with screen dumps and will be adding images as they are found and removing them as they are fixed.  The original report will still have the screen dump, but the summary will only show outstanding issues.

Hopefully this will prove helpful to both owners and GW.

Switching from 100 nS to 50 nS/div turns off and disables digital filtering.
Enabling zoom turns off digital filtering even on a stopped trace.

Issue:  Digital filtering is switched off by setting a sweep faster than 100 nS/div.
Instrument: MSO-2204EA
FW: 1.37

The 3 screen dumps show the filter working.  I then switched to 50 nS/div and back to 100 nS/div.

The input is a 36 pS measured rise time pulser from Leo Bodnar with a 50 ohm through termination.  Leo specifies them as 40 pS, but provides a scope printout showing the actual measured step response.

I had thought for a long time that it simply did not work and only discovered the true issue by accident.

The "feature" makes it difficult to examine steep transitions for ringing due to mismatches.  The measurement function does a reasonable job of measuring the overshoot and rise time, but you cannot see the actual waveform.  Enabling zoom also turns off the filter even if you have stopped the sweep.  However, it does save the filtered waveform correctly. So to view the filtered trace it must be transferred to a PC and plotted.

Edit:  This will not be fixed.  GW says it's a limitation of interpolation, but even in dot mode the problem persists.  And there is no reason not to filter a stopped trace.  So it's a marketing check box item rather than an engineering tool.
