Rigol DHO814 or Rigol 1054Z
« on: December 12, 2023, 05:26:20 pm »
I'm really having a hard time deciding between these two. This would be my first digital scope, and would be primarily used on my home bench doing various electronic and ham radio related projects, repair and troubleshooting.
I have used my Tektronix analog scope for years, so I am quite familiar with the oscilloscope. However, I really need to step up to an entry level digital scope.

One thing that attracts me to the DHO814 is the USB-C power supply. I work in industrial electronics a lot, and the isolation afforded by the USB-C is attractive.
However, as with anything brand new, there always seems to be some bugs in the first few versions. The trusty old 1054Z has a proven track record.

What are your thoughts on these two ??

Thanks,
Matt

Hi,

DHO804, without any doubts.
I have both at home right now, it's as if the DS1054Z came from the Stone Age, in almost all respects.

By isolation you mean using a battery, right? The scope is not floating with the included PSU, and the BNCs are not insulated or anything. You probably know that already anyway.

If it's only between those two, it's already answered and not much more to add there. But, ¿have you had a look at Micsig? They are generally well regarded, and many of them come with an included battery. If you intend to use it while moving around, and want bench scope capabilities they are hard to beat.

In that price range the SDS800X-HD will come out soon too, but it has a regular power plug with the PSU inside, so no easy battery conversion.

DH804 is orders of magnitude better, at EVERYTHING.

DS1054Z is an old fashioned relic by comparison.

(And here we see the harm the endless "bug" threads do - people out there are actually considering a DS1054Z because of them)

Reality check: There are very few, very minor bugs in the DHO. Annoyance-level things, no showstoppers at all. I can count them on one hand.

Compared to an old analog 'scope? Prepare to be blown away.

... with very nice measurement trend plotting capability...  ;)

I still agree, I wouldn't want to step back to the heritage DS times, but I hope that we will get the trend plots on the DHO series as well.

Is the touch screen on the DHO8xx an improvement or a drawback?

Surely the first.
I think I´ll make a video in the next days to demonstrate this.

HUGE improvement.

These 'scopes have hundreds of settings/options. Navigating them with buttons/twisty knobs is far slower than with a touch screen.

Also the readability of text on these is an order of magnitude better, they have windowing, access via web browser, 200MHz bandwidth after hacking, ... the list goes on and on.

Whatever you decide it'll be way ahead of an analog scope

DHO over DS

The other question is: How much would a Rigol DS1054Z have to drop in price to make it a bargain compared to the DHO804?
At the moment it is € 355.81 (VAT incl.).

€ 200. At 250 it would be a great buy, but not a bargain.
Yes, it's completely arbitrary.

In terms of features it's probably worth about €200 now but I still wouldn't want one, I'd save up for a DHO800 instead.

You can change AC/DC coupling just by touching the switch. No need to use the dropdown.

(...and the GND switch also works :) )

The DHO800 can also be hacked to over 200MHz.

(close to 280Mhz if you want to go all the way but the 1.25Ghz sample rate come up a bit short when you turn on multiple channels at that bandwidth)

This is really cool, but hard to see(for me.. ;) ) - should be better highlighted (btw, I think I´ve found a little bug in there, will post it in the suitable thread).

Thanks to everyone fior the input. I have watched a few videos and done some reading about this. And I am starting to see what you mean. The DHO's are a huge step forward from the old DSO's.
However for me, going from my old tech analog scope, this is going to be a quantum leap...LOL
