Intermittent BNC Cable
« on: January 08, 2014, 06:29:52 am »
I ordered a MALE BNC TO BNC cable, and found out its intermittent, and only make contact when I pull on the ends slightly. Yet, when I check it with on continuity tester it's fine. What gives? It's a cheapo from eBay. The only thing I can figure is the the connectors are out of tolerance.

Cheap BNC connectors are total shit. I have fitted thousands (mostly decent ones :)) so speak from experience.

Don't BNC come in both 75 and 50 ohm varieties,  that don't fully mate,  or can even damage?
Whoah! Watch where that landed we might need it later.

Physically they are exactly same, from a mating faces POV.

You're thinking of "N" connectors.

They have been physically compatible since 1978 (1978 standard IEC 169-8).

Crimp pins meant for (presumably) RG-58 which is multi-stranded, crimped onto a solid center conductor of RG-58ish cable can give nice intermittent joints like that.  That or the shield breaking off from flexing, but if you can see into the back of the crimp, then you can inspect that.
