Why are there no relays in TDS2000 scopes?
« on: October 08, 2013, 09:30:34 pm »
I wonder why there are no relays in TDS2000 and probably TDS1000 or TBS1000 scopes.

How are the ranges switched?
Why do other manufacturers use mechanical relays when Tektronix doesn't? Tektronix must be using some optocouplers or something.

If I remember correctly, somebody else asked that a while ago and free_electron said they use FETs for the switching.

In most digital oscilloscopes (Agilent, Owon, Rigol, GW Instek,) you hear the mechanical relays clicking.

Yeah, I know, I mean specifically in this oscilloscope.

Well, I could not find that thread. Are the FETs those K300 and K350 here? http://youtu.be/3K04bHJJQQA?t=15m37s

I would assume so, since K is usually used for a relay, and I think I remember a little discussion about them.

Hmm... I can't find the thread either.

Why do most manufacturers use mechnaical relays instead? Are they better for middle-class oscilloscopes.
What is cheaper? FET or a relay? Well, maybe Tektronix has a special patent on this, while others use relays instead.
