I'm guilty (Voltcraft VC950 Teardown)
« on: May 31, 2014, 10:31:21 pm »
Hi everybody,

I'm truely ashamed. I did it. I turned it on, before i took it apart  ;)

Here's my Voltcraft VC950 Teardown. Couldn't find one in the internet so i posted it here.

First:

The VC950 feels pretty sturdy, almost like a brickstone. Never had a heavier DMM in my hands (well, i didn't have a lot of DMM in my hands). Looks like it could take a beating.
The Software works nicely for me, using it under Win 8.1. Export to CSV and Excel (diagramm is not that great tho, who cares i can make my own diagram with the values).

First Con:

This thing beeps a lot. Every keypress makes a beep. You can turn the beeping off, but then the continuity test doesn't beep anymore  :-- Continuity works like a charm.

I'm a noob and there is not much i can do about it right now. So I'm not able and willing to rant about this product. I let you guys tell me that it sucks  ::)

Cost: 260 EUR + 8 Euro for a set with a clamp and a cheap plastic toolcase. Clamp cost almost 60 EUR alone.

There is a chip under the LCD which reads BL 55022 ; 1001 NT; C66 0028AP

The yellow "bubble" reads TVR 911 and has MOV 101 next to it. There seem to be two more of those right next to it in heatschrink
The blue "bubble" reads 10J 2KY MP0

Have fun.

Greetings

It looks like a APPA 500 series multimeter. http://www.appatech.com/appa_product_home.php?pdid=2009091810044515198&&kindid=2005081003113623241
It should be a decent product.  :-+ :-+
Amazing machines. https://www.youtube.com/user/denha (It is not me...)

Thanks for the teardown. It looks pretty well made and I would be happy to have one based on the construction.

That is an LCD driver (doh :-)) The main meter IC is the ES51966A from Cyrustek, prominently featured on that daughter board. There should be a microcontroller somewhere. If I get it right the ES51966A needs one.

There is another chip under the LCD, but i can't see what kind. I'm a little to frightend to rip the lcd out, because i think i'll damage something and this DMM is a lot of money for me  ;D

Layout reminds me of the UT181A.   Downloaded the manual for the VC950 and did a search on 61326 and also EMC.  Nothing.

Does look nice though.

Sorry for the late reply. It was a set i bought. The clamp was therefore included. It is also possible to buy it without the clamp.

The name on the 830B has me laughing. I doubt that thing is capable of controlling any mess at all.
