Owon SDS7102V vs. 7102E ?
« on: January 30, 2014, 09:57:35 pm »
Hello,
does somebody know which are the main differences between the Owon SDS7102V and SDS7102E models?
On the Owon website I can find only the 7102E; is this a cost-reduced version of the 7102V with less memory? Or does it bring also some HW improvements?

Thanks in advance!

Looks like this applies

'The "V" variants offers a VGA output instead of the RS232 interface'

The V means VGA output, as above. But...

If I may make a suggestion.

I bought the Owon SDS7102V for £350. It was rubbish.

I returned it and bought a Rigol DS1074Z for £450. Yes it is £100 more but it is MUCH more professional and much higher quality.

Just throwing it into the mix if you're trying to decide on a 'scope.

Thanks,
yes, it seems that "V" stands for "VGA", but then "E" what is for? "Enhanced" (but with lower memory)? And why now only the E model is on the Owon website, only because it's more cost-appealing?

Anyway, could you please expand your comment about the SDS7102V vs. DS1074Z ? What you didn't like exactly? And when did you buy it, it seems there were several HW revisions in the past?

Thanks!

£450 ?  Rigol UK has it listed at £639.

I'm not certain what the E stands for, but it seems that the E version only has 100kpts of memory vs. 10Mpts on the V version. I don't see how it is enhanced so I doubt that's what it means. "Economy" perhaps?

Well, to put it nicely, the owon feels like a toy. The Rigol feels like a professional test instrument. The user interface on the owon is frankly laughable and even down to the choice of colour scheme it was bad. The Rigol is so much better, has more options for decoding etc, has 12Mpts of memory as default, and 24M if you buy or 'obtain' the upgrade key. And of course, you have four channels available to use instead of only two.

In pretty much every way the Rigol is superior to the Owon.

The only reason I bought the Owon in the first place is because the Rigol 2000 series is out of my budget. I didn't know about the 1000Z series until after I bought the owon, and since the price was so similar to the owon I decided to get a 1000Z series instead. It is orders of magnitude better than the owon, seriously.

I bought the owon about 2 weeks ago, sent it back after about 3 days, and I bought the Rigol about a week ago.

You are looking at the -S version with the built in AWG. Here is the correct one:

£457.20 inc. VAT

E is the educational purposes version. From what I've read in the SDS7102 review thread, they're meant as a cheap line of scopes which are replacement for the older PDS line.
