HP 16700A / 16702A Compatible Boards
« on: April 30, 2017, 10:35:01 pm »
Please forgive my ignorance and thank you for your time. I have an older HP 16500C logic analyzer with 2, 16531A  400 megasample acquisition boards, one 16530A timebase board and one 16510A logic analyzer board. I am thinking of buying a HP 16700A or a 16702A. Is it possible to remove the old boards from the 16500C and install them in the 16700A or 702A ? Will the 16700A software properly recognize the 16530A, 16531A, and 16510A ?

I believe it will, but it's been years since I changed the boards in mine.  I use the 16532A and 16534A boards in mine.

BTW,  you can change a '533A into a '534A by changing a couple of resistors.   I don't remember which ones and no longer have an un-modified '533A to verify which ones.

According to Agilent, those boardsets are not supported on the 16700.
But the compatibility matrix also claims that certain combinations will not work that actually do, so take it with a grain of salt.

I wouldn't worry too much about the 16510A not being supported by the 16700 series mainframes. If you acquire a 16700 series mainframe without any logic analyzer modules you should be able to pick up a supported 16550A or a 16555A for not much more than the cost of shipping these days, and those are a lot more capable analyzer modules than a 16510A.

If the 16530A/16531A and 16532A oscilloscope modules are not supported nor functional in the 16700 series it might be a bit more expensive to acquire a supported and working 16533A or 16534A.

I have a 16510A and a 16530A/16531A and 16532A which I have never bothered trying in a 16700 series mainframe to see exactly what happens. I suppose I should give that a try just to find out.

Thanks to all of you for helping me out. It looks like I will have to change scope cards if I buy a 16700 or 16702.

Thanks for all your help. I got a HP 16500C. The Agilent / Keysight page for the 16500C does not have a download link for the operating system. Do you folks know if there is another download location for the version 1.09 of the operating software ? I checked on google and so far have not found a link.

You're a genius. Big thanks to gslick. I used the same keysight web site and I clicked on the tech support section - no files to download. Thanks for finding them for me. I lost my startup disk.

I found some 2GB industrial grade CF cards that work in the 16500B/C mainframes.   I have them available with the OS and symbol utilities loaded and mounted in a CF-IDE adapter.

The run $40 shipped...  sorry about the price, but I had to buy a bunch of them at a stupid price and less than half had a compatible controller in them (despite being the same model/part number of card).

The 16500's apparently issue a some undocumented commands to the disk and VERY few cards/hard disks support those commands.  PM me if you want one.

I bought some 2GB Innodisk iCF 4000 (Industrial CompactFlash® 4000 Memory Card) on eBay a few years ago and didn't have any problems using those with passive IDE - CF adapters in an HP 16500C and a 1660C. I can't remember if I tried any other CF cards first and had issues with any.
