Metrel MD9040 Mini Teardown
« on: January 26, 2015, 03:45:36 pm »
Hi,

I've owned this meter for a few weeks and haven't not seen this meter mentioned in a review so thought I would do one as I know you all like looking at the insides of test gear.

Its a largish meter compared to some other ones I have, coming in at over 600 grams, cased in a thick robber Rubber boot that's a struggle to remove. As for construction, the case cover is solid, has a large dual display and the rotary switch has a solid clunk to it, the function buttons are rubberized and have a positive feel to them when pressed.

The rear case must be removed to access the fuses, the battery has its own cover but the boot must be removed to access it, the battery is a 9 volt type that connects to a wired battery snap, a bit of a poor show as I would prefer a battery compartment with metal contacts.

The rear cover is fitted with metal foil that contacts the pcb via springs, it is cut out for the two leds used for transferring data with the optional cable

Its a Trms meter in AC volts and current but it lacks a back light and temperature range.

The readings are fast on this meter, though there is no mention on metrels web page regarding a bar graph this meter has one and its pretty fast. I have not observed any over shoot while taking readings.

Continuity, Not sure if its latched, its certainly responsive and fast but it doesn't click when striking the probes, the beep is loud and clear.

Diode test: it will light a white led dimly but wont read it.

Capacitance measurements work pretty quickly, on its auto range it read a 1000uf electrolytic just over three seconds, on the mf range it read the same cap in two seconds, both times the cap was discharged.

Its quite sensitive on Ac ranges, it read some 6 volts AC at 50hz with one probe connected to a small transformer.

The meters rated as cat IV as are the probes, there is no CE sticker to be found  ;D

The probes are supplied with tip covers and the tips are gold plated.

Input protection seems decent, two big fuses, a few movs but as this meter used two pcb,s, some of the input circuit is between the pcb's, I didn't separate them while taking pictures.

The input sockets are a split type to allow for the warnings when the leads are in the current sockets but the range is on the volts range, it comes up ERR and screams pretty loudly.

For some reason the metrel web site isnt very informative so I copied the specs from the manual, the manual is decent enough, in English and German.

50 years working with electronics and I still wonder how small parts can have all that smoke inside !

Your meter is made by Brymen.  Maybe a Brymen BM822 or BM821?

That was my first mini review, quite enjoyed doing it too  ;D

It certainly looks like a brymen, I had a look around after you mentioned it. In fact when I looked at a new meter I did want a brymen but had trouble getting one in the UK, seems I got one after all  ;D

Yup, in a blue boot instead of a red one and only a three year warranty.
