Item on eBay. I would like to know if its worth going for.
« on: September 16, 2017, 03:16:46 pm »
Hi I have found this on ebay in the Uk and dont know if its a good make bad make or even worth it. First scope purchase.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gould-Oscilloscope-DSO-420-/192304977368?hash=item2cc64515d8:g:casAAOSwHm5ZuDsh

I am also watching this one
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tektronix-TAS475-analogue-oscilloscope-100MHz-4-Channels-/272843995141?hash=item3f86c4f805:g:CJoAAOSwbURZt52G
which is very local to me.

any advise would be appreciated. got a very small budget.

The seller of the Gould seems to be a standup guy in terms of return policy.  But it's only a 20 MHz scope and that just isn't enough unless you limit yourself to audio.  It might not give a good representation of a 4 MHz square wave as it could only include the 5th harmonic.  Not bad but 4 MHz isn't much.

Any time you can get 4 channels and 100 MHz of bandwidth, you are getting into a reasonable arena.  That's essentially the specs of the Rigol DS1054Z.  They're not equal scopes by any means but the channels and bandwidth are good things to have.

It would be ideal if you could pick it up.  Bring test leads and a signal source (or use the source on the scope).

Don't touch the Gould or the TAS475. Complete bastards to repair. If this is your first scope purchase and your budget is low, go for a quality analogue unit with 50MHz or more bandwidth. You don't want to take on the complexity of a digital scope unless you can afford to buy a new one with a warranty (and then get a Rigol as mentioned).

This is a really nice auction from a respectable seller who I have used before: https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/292245385388

I have one of these which is my daily driver scope: https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/122697662787

Also keep an eye on gumtree.com for scopes. I've picked up 50MHz analogue scopes on there for a tenner before that are working.

Edit: if I was on a very tight budget I'd probably make an offer of £35 on this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/253109392746 - if it's completely fecked they will give you your cash back. If there's anything even slightly wrong they will give you some cash back. Good seller.

£1 = 1MHz is the rule :)

That's some sort of weird digitally controlled 'scope (no twisty knobs).

It might have its specialist uses but as a general purpose scope I'd avoid it. Even DSOs still get twisty knobs.
