Good lab power supply, not china crap yet not overpriced?
« on: December 27, 2016, 05:07:19 am »
Hello, is there such thing as Good lab power supply, not china crap yet not overpriced?

I see the gwinstek has one PSP-405:

Voltage 0~40V
Current 0~5A

PROTECTION
OVL/OCL/OPL/OTP

http://www.gwinstek.com/en-global/pr...ies/PSP-Series

They unfortunally do not make up to 10A version with voltage at 40V
That's their cheapest power supply at 285.55 €
http://www.tme.eu/en/details/psp-405...ies/gw-instek/

Is the something better priced with same parameters, available in EU, and with same OVL/OCL/OPL/OTP protections?

Siglent have been selling a few of their SPD3303X-E 3 channel units lately:
@ 370 Euro I know that's a bit more than you wanted to know.

Check ebay for used PSU.
I will not buy any PSU from Rigol,GW Instek of Siglent. Maybe HW is OK, but their SW and firmware is not comparable with Agilent/HP stuff.

Very nice find.
Can I use channels like 32V 3.2A×2 means total of 6.4A, so I get single channel of 32V at 6.4A?

Yes.

Mode: Parallel  (it use Ch1 and Ch2 internally connected parallel)

Parallel mode output is CH1 out (just like single channel power supply. Do not use CH2 outputs at all in this mode)  In this mode 0 - 32V  and 0 - 6.4A.

BEV of course. Cars with smoke exhaust pipes - go to museum. In Finland quite all electric power is made using nuclear, wind, solar and water.

Is the SPD3303X-E linear also like the SPD3303X?

I wonder if it is possible to hack to for higher resolution?

It is all made in Asia. The problem with HP/Agilent power supplies is that the fans are very loud (even on the models which change the fan speed depending on the load).

IMHO the GW Instek GPE-2323 seems like a reasonable choice to me. 1mA current read back resolution, individual knobs for voltage/current for each channel and relatively low price.

Well I have some stuff from China that is high quality. It all depends on price you pay. And also on the honesty of the manufacturer / seller. One can overprice stuff like crazy, that does not make things better.

I have power supplies coming out of my ying yang, Lambda, HP, Fluke/Philips and Xantrex. These are really nice supplies.   Getting a deal on one is something I can't resist.  Don't think I've paid much more than $70 for any of them.  Sure, they didn't quite work, but your hobby is electronics.  If you make a concerted effort and are patient they can be found.

Yes, how else would they weigh 8kg.  ;)

Quite possibly but you'd have to find some internal imagery to check the PCB's are exactly the same. E, meaning the economy model may have some HW changes to bring the price down the 140 Euro from the higher res X model.

While I understand the satisfaction of enabling further functionality by hacking you'd have to wonder if the time you spent trying it might not be better to just shell out the extra and get on with using it ?  :-//

Other features:
Smart fan cooled. (very very quiet in idle mode)
Series or parallel outputs
Etc.

IIRC the price difference is 370 euro versus 610 euro so a hack is 'worth' 240 euro. Given the price difference I expect the hardware to be (somewhat) different but it is a lot of money to go from 10mA to 1mA resolution. At 610 euro I'd rather look at Agilent's E36100 series with a much higher precision/resolution current and voltage read back.

509 Euro
http://www.siglenteu.com/pdxx.aspx?id=1116&T=2&tid=17
I rembered the price including VAT from Eleshop.nl but didn't notice you quoted the price ex. VAT. The difference including VAT is 170 euro for 10mA (440 euro) versus 1mA resolution (610 euro) even though the accuracy is the same for both models (0.3% +10mA). Since VAT is quite constant across Europe (21% to 25%) it doesn't hurt to just quote the prices including VAT.

Is it better write: "even though my belief is  that the accuracy is the same for both models"

I have not linked any page.

It need note to Siglent that European web side have error.

But here is what I see Siglent  America  web side what I usually use.
But this attached image is not what I read.
I read official data sheets and quote was from latest data sheet (version 2015.7).

I have a feeling lots of GW Instek lab power supplies are dumped on Ebay right now (probably from the ITT university bankcrupty sale).

When the X model shows 100mA the actual current can be 90mA to 110mA. When the X-E model shows 100mA then the actual current can be 80mA to 120mA. All in all the extra resolution of the X model doesn't really translate into being able to see small currents in the single mA range.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

Depends on model, some are not loud at all, or are fanless. Agilent 6612C were so unbearably loud that I modified resistor values in the fan speed control circuit.

Can you elaborate more on this bankruptcy sale? Which company or university? And in which country?
Any link to the bankruptcy event or to the actual sale on Ebay? :)

Yup OP, I need the same thing, I've been using SMPS from DVD players, an older printer, and random wall packs. Thats fine enough for most little things I do, but so it won't be.
