Hantek DSO5000P decision
« on: January 31, 2016, 10:15:45 pm »
Hello all.

I thinking on buying Hantek DSO.

I do see that the models DSO5072P, 5102P, 5202P, have slight diferences in aspect beside the bandwith maximum.

I've read the bandwith hack thread, and my question is:

If I go for the DSO5072P, will I get all the functions of the 5202P version with the hack?
Are there any other major diferences in circuitry?

The price diference between the bottom and top model is 100€ (120$ more or less), and I'm concerned if I can save this money safely.

Help appreciated and thank you for your reading.

Best regards

Joao

Yes, the only difference is the bandwidth. Still, I would strongly recommend not getting a Hantek scope. When I first started looking at getting a scope I ended up buying the MSO5102. The firmware was terrible, the scope would lock up on me at least several times per hour requiring a full reboot. If you search these forums you will find multiple threads complaining about Rigol & Siglent firmware, but the Hantek is far, far worse. I ended up returning the MSO5102.

I ended up getting the Rigol DS2072A-S. I have really enjoyed it so far. Not saying that it doesn't have its own firmware issues but its never fully locked up on me like the Hantek did hourly. If the DS2000A series is more than you are willing to spend Rigol also makes the DS1000Z series. Both the DS2000A & DS1000Z can be "unlocked" to the highest bandwidth available as well as unlocking all the options. So would be wise to buy the lowest bandwidth version (DS2072A or DS1054Z) and then "unlock" it for free. The DS2072A is a 2 channel 70MHz scope, that can be unlocked to 300MHz. The DS1054Z is a 4 channel 50MHz scope that can unlocked to 100 MHz. A quick search on the forums will turn up many, many threads on these 2 scopes.

One note on the Rigol DS2072A-S, the "-S" at the end means it comes with a integrated generator. I would advise against buying the builtin generator option unless you don't have space for a separate generator. If I remember correctly it was an extra $300 for that option, and the generator interface is awkward and clumsy, wish I had put that extra $300 towards a separate AWG.

I'm not trying to suggest Rigol is your only option. I only have recent experience with Hantek and Rigol so don't really know much about the other brands other than what I've read here.

Ok, thank you.

The ds2000 series is sported with a very nice 2Gsps but it costs 740€... I'll have to stick with the ds1054z.

I'm comparing local prices with home site reference and a few stores online, But I'm decided to get this one.

If I hack the ds1054z, is it reversible?
I imagine if i have some problem within warranty time, they will drop it for sure if hacked... :)

Regards

Yes, uninstalling the hack is as simple as sending a single command over SCPI.

:SYSTem:OPTion:UNINSTall

The lower case letters are optional, so you can send just

:SYST:OPT:UNINST

Edit: I'm sure you will be quite happy with the DS1054Z. For the price its a good deal. Enjoy.
