N5181A Agilent RF Generator

Hello all,

I am writing because we did a teardown of the N5181A Agilent RF Generator and found three Agilent attenuators (some pictures attached).

The question is the following: why do they embed leds? What is the technical reason behind this choice? We do not see the point in having them emit light!
