A Rigol DS1052E as first oscilloscope
« on: May 20, 2019, 02:23:54 pm »
Hello people, I found a Rigol DS1052E for 310€ here in Greece.
Does it worth its money as it is a > 10 years old model.
I'm relatively new into electronics and I want mainly to develop audio circuits (both analog and digital, using microcontrollers).
Will this model suffice? Will it become obsolete (unserviceable)  in the next few years? Is the 50Mhz limit enough for a microcontroller running at faster speeds?
Do you have any good alternatives?

Thank you!

no. today your first oscilloscope is Rigol DS1054Z, one day you will thank it for the extra 2 channels. and its upgradable to 100MHz unit through simple hack (DS1104Z), 50 - 100 MHz is more than enough for  almost anything happening around here including audio. if you get DS1052E, you'll be sorry for the lack of 2 channels and near obsolete oscilloscope.

This thread should be in T&M forum, not here, unless you want to calibrate or discuss accuracy of your new scope.

I would get a DS1052E or a DS1102E as a first scope if the price is right. They are very well built machines that allow you to do a lot in the absence of a complete scope.

To me, the price you mentioned is too high when compared to the DS1054Z mentioned by Mechatrommer. If you can find a unit in good condition for 100 (maybe 150 Euros if it is in really good condition), that is certainly worth it.

Had to convert the value to dollars ($278) so I could answer, but agree with the others - NO.

Now, if the price was low enough, I guess for a first scope sure. But it'd have to be WAY lower than that price. WAY lower.  :--

I told my friends I could teach them to be funny, but they all just laughed at me.

I sold mine a week ago for 180€. In that money range go for the DS1054Z.

The DS1052E WAS a nice beginner scope a few years back... that's why I bought one.  Don't buy one now... go straight to a DS1054Z.

You can get one cheaper than that:

Yes. A DS1054Z is only about 75 Euros more and it's a LOT better.
