To maintain some control over the code. There is another thread that is even more restrictive.

"ewwww" control. What is so special about it? Is is a one time code, is it allocated to someone? Is the code used to track any subsequent purchases? Why is the NZ distributor for Siglent giving out the 'code' to another company selling the same thing.. I've bought stuff from Saelig before and they have been great.. I hope they are not some how involved with the scope spammer.

The "control" that you so disdain comes from the fact it was originally meant for EEVBlog users - the PM requires people to at least create an account to get it. Put it in a plain post and anyone with Google-fu skills can find it.
