HP/Agilent 6642 Recapping
« on: October 21, 2020, 12:55:53 am »
Hi All,

Purchased a HP 6642a looks from date code on some chips that it was built around 1994, so 26 years old...Works fine from preliminary tests but I would prefer swapping out RIFA Film caps and Electrolytic. RIFA where not an issue. But the Electrolytic are another story... they are 3 pin, so if I change them for 2 pin they no longer fit as they will not line up correctly.

What have some of you done to change out 3pin to 2 pin as they are really hard to source. Just get some with long pins and make it work? Insulate whatever sticks out? Tried Digikey and Mouser
Tks

Check to make sure those electrolytics are actually bad. I'd pull one or two and test them, if they test good, the rest are likely fine too.

I have a similar unit (6644A) and it tests ok, if you download the service manual, it details how to test the output ripple and PARD etc to see if the unit is within specifications.

As for the Rifa caps, rip those things out pronto! :)
Where does all this test equipment keep coming from?!?
