Price on Rigol 1054z
« on: July 12, 2020, 07:35:48 am »
Hi guys,

Rigol 1054z has been on my to-buy list for a long time, now I really need it and I look all over the internet and nothing is cheaper than $700 AUD shipped to Australia.

Has it always been this expensive or did something happen that inflated the prices? I remember it was cheaper...

Baught mine from Batronix at the end of 2014, I think there was some winter holidays discount:  it was 300 EUR + 19% VAT, so 356 EUR in total, no other taxes and free shipping (for EU).

Now, at the same shop is about 10-15% more expensive, 339 EUR before VAT instead of 300 how it was back then, but I think it's about the same price considering I bought mine on a Christmas sale.

Now, instead of a price discount, it came unlocked.

Thanks mate, it's about $750 AUD total shipped to Australia from batronix.

I regret not going for it before. It being so expensive, now I'm starting to consider SDS1104X-E...

Price seems to have been going up lately. High demand?  :-//

How much does this Instek go for in Australia?

https://www.tequipment.net/Instek/GDS-1054B/Digital-Oscilloscopes/?search=true

I'd get one of those long before paying extra for a Siglent.

No the corona has stopped the supply chain for some parts and prices go up, same with computer parts like motherboard or video-card.

So it's the supply:demand ratio.

Same thing.  :)

I've been trying to get hold of an Analog Discovery 2 lately and there simply aren't any at any price.

You might want to get it from an Aussie distributor for warranty purposes, but yeah $649 + GST is the current pricing probably largely due to AUD.

I would personally suggest the 1104X-E, it can be firmware unlocked to 200 meg, among a couple other features. It's slightly more expensive than the 1054Z but I've heard it has a better interface. I also think Dave did a video comparing the FFT, from what I recall it was better.

It says $447.66 AUD but shipping cost is AUD 181.14, and there should also be a 10% tax that our government charges on top of that...

Yes, thanks mate. That's where I'll be ordering mine once I make up my mind. I definitely wouldn't want to deal with sellers from China if there's anything wrong.

From a reputable Australian seller the Instek goes for AUD 900 + 10% GST - see https://www.x-on.com.au/MPN/GWConnect/GDS1054B

If you buy from overseas seller like tequipment you may also get hit with import processing charges depending on shipment method.  They used to get though OK if under AUD 1000, but the rules are getting stricter and UPS/FedEx/DHL can make random decisions based on the paperwork.  Postal shipment via USPS from them would likely get through, and maybe even without any GST added, but make sure you read and understand their terms... https://www.tequipment.net/international-orders/#anchor10

The Siglent 1104X-E is going to be a little cheaper than the Instek - approx AUD 900 inc 10% GST + roughly $20 shipping
https://www.triotest.com.au/electronic-and-rf/oscilloscope/siglent/siglent-sds1104x-e-digital-oscilloscope-100mhz-4-channel-1gs-s-with-serial-decode

If you're on a budget but still want to buy locally to reduce risk, then the Rigol is still the cheapest of the popular/trusted brands.

Is Siglent stuff in general not good quality or are there other concerns about their 1104X-E model?

Some people here are constantly recommending one brand over the other - especially re Siglent vs Instek.  Different people have different opions and biases.  I don't think it is so much related to hardware quality - the low end models are all reasonably similar and are all built to a price.  Rather it is concerns with the firmware stability/implementation and overall feature set.  Especially when using things like serial decode and FFT.

If you just want a general scope for hobby use it won't make a lot of difference.  If you have specific needs, then make sure you know what they are, read the datasheets / user manuals, watch any of Dave's related reviews/teardowns, and read through more of the scope topics here... but be prepared for sometimes confusing and misleading discussion (rants).  Sometimes having a second supplementary instrument (e.g Sigrok and a USB logic analyser, or maybe a good sound card for audio FFT) will be a better choice than getting a more expensive scope.  At least until you really know your needs.

Nothing to do with quality, it's a lot more 'scope for the money at that price (they usually sell for a LOT more than that).

Tequipment still has it for the same US$349 that it's been for a while now. If the cost has gone up lately it's likely a combination of shipping increases and worsening exchange rate.

I've managed to get myself on a shortlist so I might get one of the first ones when they become available again.

(...at the end of July, honest!)

They also gave me a generous discount to make up for the waiting so it's not all bad.
