HP/Agilent 6632B Calibration, "Wrong Mode" error???....
« on: July 25, 2022, 02:42:14 am »
Been on a bit of a test equipment buying spree recently...
Picked up an HP branded 6632B.
Users Guide = http://ridl.cfd.rit.edu/products/manuals/Agilent/power%20supplies/CD1/Model/66332usr.pdf
Service Manual = http://ridl.cfd.rit.edu/products/manuals/Agilent/power%20supplies/CD1/Service/66332Aser.pdf

It mostly works, but the cal is a bit out for the "high range" current measurement.  At around 100mA there is about a +3.2mA offset on the display vs what it's actually outputting.  This is reflected when it's in constant current mode as the output current is still about 3.2mA high with a 100mA output (externally confirmed to be 100mA).

I have already opened up the unit and set the switches to reset the cal password, so that's good to go.
I can also successfully complete some sections like the "Voltage programming and measurement calibration", "Overvoltage protection Calibration", and P1 of "Current Programming and High-Range Measurement Calibration", but others fail.

...there are some tests like the "Current Programming and High-Range Measurement Calibration" P2 that gives an error on the display:
"WRONG MODE"

Neither of the manuals say anything about a "WRONG MODE" error (that I saw at least).

What's the deal here?  Anyone know what "WRONG MODE" means and how to get around it to finish the cal procedures?

Oh.  I'm using the wrong value current sense resistor.

"WRONG MODE" is a terrible error message for that.

So what was going on was that because my sense resistor was too big, the supply was in constant voltage mode instead of constant current mode.  It wants over 4A of constant current on the P2 calibration stage and it couldn't get it with the resistor I had on there and the 20V output maximum.
