Brymen BM867 & BM869
« on: February 19, 2017, 02:39:40 am »
Hi... Wish to purchase one of these meters. Before purchasing, wish to confirm whether these meters can do "LoZ" measurement? Kindly advise. Thanks.

Yeah, I have a Brymen 257 and it has it but I don't think the 860 series meters do.

You can have a look at all the meter datasheets on the Brymen website

For a meter that does not provide LoZ measurement, can we build an adapter to be used with the meter for LoZ measurement? It's like the uCurrent concept which Dave invented before... Thanks.

My BM867s does not have a LoZ function.

This hasn't been a problem for me, though when I eventually get a second handheld, I will be looking for one.  It really only comes up if you want to discharge a cap that stores its charge for a long time, and most of the large caps I've worked with either have a bleeder or are directly powering circuitry that uses up the charge on them quickly after being powered down.  There's also other methods for discharging such a cap, though it is nice to do it through something with a decent CAT rating.

I wander what is inside that little box (SV225), a shunt resistor?

Probably 2 series connected PTC thermistors and a series resistor, to limit the current to a semi constant value as the capacitor discharges.

I have one and took it apart some time ago.  I'll try to get a photo uploaded.  From memory, it had a 1K resistor and a ptc/ntc?

I've attached the circuit diagram.  It's just paralleled with the input jacks of the meter.

Many thanks... Fluke distributor just quoted the Fluke SV225 for USD116...  ;D
