Looking for Lecroy Waverunner Xi series service manual
« on: September 01, 2018, 06:38:23 pm »
I've searched the forum and think this has not been asked before:

Does anyone happen to have the service manual for the Lecroy Waverunner Xi series?
Is it available publicly anyhow?
I have a Waverunner 44Xi here from 2006 which has boot issues.

The service manual will make my troubleshooting much easier  8)

Thanks in advance!

I haven't seen a service manual around. What boot issues do you have? Maybe it's just the hard drive and/or the data on it that's causing them.

I'm getting attached screen at start-up.

After BIOS reset the display works again and shows me a normal startup procedure until "verifying DMI pool data".
After that the screen stays black (also on the VGA output). Normally I would expect the Windows XP start-screen.
So I guess indeed there is something corrupt on the HDD.

I guess I have to start looking into the Recovery Tools and Procedures from Lecroy...

If I were in your situation, I'd do the following:

- make a bootable USB stick (e.g. using LinuxLive USB Creator)
- boot the scope from the USB stick
- copy the hard drive to an external hard drive ("mkdir /mnt/sdb; mount /dev/sdb /mnt/sdb; dd if=/dev/sda /mnt/sdb/lecroy.img" or similar - just be careful, dd can wipe your harddrive if you don't know what you're doing; when in doubt, ask)
- copy the calibration data on D: to the USB stick as well, just to have it in two places because you're in trouble when you no longer have it
- reboot
- unplug the USB drive and USB stick
- follow the recovery instructions: http://cdn.teledynelecroy.com/files/manuals/scope_system_recovery_instructions.pdf

Maybe this will get me banned but yesterday I talked to a certain former member of this forum who happens to know more about lecroy scopes than anyone else I came across, and I asked him about this problem. This is what he said:

Quote
Tell your friend that he should replace the BIOS backup battery (IIRC a CR2025 or 2032, sits on the mainboard) and there's a good chance the scope will be up and running again. If the BIOS battery voltage gets too low the CMOS content gets corrupted which means the mainboard doesn't know the LCD panel any more. That's quite a common problem when these scopes get older, and there's some serious disassembly required (i.e. you have to remove the front end and the acquisition board) to get to the mainboard and the battery to replace it.

BTW, if your friend's scope's handle is blue (like the rear housing) then this means his scope hasn't been with LeCroy for rework where some of the issues of the old (M)Xi Series has been fixed. One problem is the handle itself, which is prone to breakwhich will result in a dropped scope. LeCroy replaced it with the improved handle of the Xi-A which is black. In addition, the standard cooling fans were insufficient to prevent premature PSU failures and front end connector failure through overheating/thermal stress. I'd recommend to get some uprated fans with higher airflow for the scope (there are three main fans, one left for the PSU, one right and one on the acquisition board located over the ADC hybrids.

And since he'll have his scope open, I'd strongly recommend to replace the awful Celeron M CPU with a Pentium-M Dothan with 2MB cache, and upgrade the RAM to 1GB, which will provide a nice performance boost.

If that was the big W, well yes we miss his wide knowledge of LeCroy equipment.  :(

Yes it's the big W  :).

I believe by now I must be chewing his ear off with my many questions but still he's answered all of them, and in a way even I understand  ;) I already learned so much from his messages and what he wrote in this and "the other" forum, lol  :)

I've replaced the BIOS backup battery and the scope works fine again!
Many thanks to Mr Nutts and Wuerstchenhund for their advice!  ;D ;D

Glad you made it work again.

I have a question: how loud (acoustically) the scope is?

Thanks!

I don’t have a SPL meter here. So an accurate answer I cannot provide.

At start-up the fan’s go to full speed for a couple of seconds.
That sounds really like it is lifting up...  8)
But after that they slow down and are (at least for me) not disturbing at all.

Thanks a lot,  exact dB not needed, just user experience.
Best regards,

I noticed quite some accumulated dust inside, obstructing good air flow through the heatsinks.
I guess this is one of the main reasons for the “overheating” of these scopes that you sometimes reed about.

It’s more than just dust... the fans are underdimensioned...
In a normally warm room,it will be mostly Ok, but if you have higher temps and/or bad ventilation, think of replacing them !

It appears the best thing to do is to replace the fans in any case, even if you're working in a moderate climate ;)

I know the OP has is problem solved thanks to W and the others helping greatly in this thread, but is there a way to get a "service manual" still for this scope?
I just bought one on eBay, and it is the "blue" handle type - older April 2006 version 64Xi. I haven't been able to test it yet but man this thing is chock full of dust.
Would love to know what Lecroy did to "service" them to where they have the black handle if anyone has any info on that.
Really, an resources or documentation would be super helpful. I found stuff like operators manual and some forum posts for specific problems, but nothing too much.
Thanks for anyone's help on this!

The last service manual that seems to be available publicly is from the WaveRunner 6000A series.
From Xi series onward I have not seen them popping up anywhere...

Sorry to bring an old topic back alive but I think keeping all the info bundled is better than 30 small topics.

My questions about the 44Xi since I will replace the hdd with an PATA ssd (Transcend TS32GPSD330)

- is there somewhere a teardown post / video with steps how to disassemble this scope
- if I look at the picture above it does not look like the cpu can be replaced/upgraded or can it ? Eg has it a socket?
- what fans are recommended as replacement?

Thanks.

LeCroy sent me the Xi service manual on request but asked me *NOT* to distribute it.

Apparently someone in LeCroy thinks that they should try to keep track of the people who have it.

Unfortunately what they sent doesn't have schematics.

Cheers David

The above email address is in the mean time out of order, I tried the new one for Europe:

And denied by a third company that there are service manuals.
I guess you got really lucky back in the day when it was still LeCroy.
Actually a reason not to buy any second hand LeCroy with this kind of "lack of service".

Quote
There are no existing service manuals available for disassembling Teledyne oscilloscopes as this manufacturer preferably wants you to send the scope to them for any service or repair.
