Agilent or Keysight - move NAND flash to a good scope ?
« on: February 21, 2022, 05:01:39 pm »
If one had a scope headed for the landfill (I know, all hands go up), could I move the NAND flash to a good recipient and rescue the expensive application licenses?  I know SN and cal data will go with it.  Does the user cal satisfy all cal needs on a "good" recipient board.

I also wonder if the FPGA or any other devices are serialized and would cause one more roadblock to the scheme.

save the whole unit, and put it on ebay as defective,
then people who need a part will purchase it as it is,
if you start to poke it apart, its value become zero

At the moment however, the value of the licenses + MSO + wavegen is approximately $5k (USD), ignoring MSO cabling.  It would be worth recovering if you want legitimate licenses.  However, the recipient unit would be what the donor unit was, unless you hack it, which sort of defeats the purpose of the "recovery".   :palm:

And, I don't know which package the NAND flash is in, but you better be good at removing with minimal heat.  Packages are usually only specified for three times or so (one side solder, second side solder, repair).

Doesn't like a very fun idea, calibration would never be perfect. But I am sure it could be done if the scope was really worth that much.

The cal does concern me.  Any analog offsets or gains are going to be off because there is no storage mechanism (IMHO) for them on a given board, other than in that board's original flash.

Hate to say this but maybe the answer is having the license served like it is for many software packages.  Benchvue, as an example, allows you to move the license to another machine.  It's not one of the smoother systems for doing so today but it does work.

You would be able to pull back the licenses from afar, without having a working scope.
