HP 54645D How can I adjust trace rotation?
« on: September 17, 2016, 08:48:01 pm »
From lurking on the forum, I know that many here are fans of the HP/Agilent/Keysight 54645D unit.

I have recently gotten one that experienced some less than gentle handling during shipment.

The display comes up, and the corners are square, but the display is rotated a few degrees from vertical.

The CRT seems to be sitting square with respect to the front cover, so I suspect that there must be some sort of rotation adjustment that can address this.

I have not opened the unit up yet.  I downloaded the manual, and I reviewed Chapter 8 regarding adjustments.  The chapter refers to horizontal and vertical holds, brightness, etc., but I don't see anything about rotation adjustment.

So, I am seeking knowledge and advice from the many experts here as to how to adjust this before I go tearing into the unit.

Any help or insight is greatly appreciated!!

I just got a 54645D as well and mine is ever so slightly rotated too.  I did _not_ see an adjustment mentioned in the manual where it does mention other adjustments, but that doesn't mean there isn't one on the pcb.

I think this is a TV type CRT - not a traditional oscilloscope CRT - if so you'll find a set of coils around the neck of the CRT - they are the deflection yoke.  Close inspection will show a clamp around the neck as well (part of the deflection yoke).  Loosen it and (gingerly - there's probably some volts around there!) rotate the yoke in relation to the CRT.  You'll see the image rotate.

Sorry if the explanation seems vague - it's very hard to describe and I don't have a single TV type CRT left to photograph!

Thanks, Rob!

Hopefully, I will get a chance to open it up towards the end of the week, and I will look for that clamping/ deflection yoke mechanism.  Sounds like an easy fix!
