Huge soldering suction pump
« on: March 28, 2012, 11:40:36 pm »
The other day I was ordering something from Conrad and the price was just too low to get the 10% discount of the week so I ordered extra suction pump and it was basically free.

The goods arrived today and I was pretty surprised to see how big this suction pump was, I have seen different models over the years but this thing is just too big and I am not sure if its handy when it comes to fine desoldering.

I think most of you guys seen this before (since I am more in to electrics than electronics) but for those who didn’t see and want some good suction power see here how it looks like:

Compared to "normal" size pump:

Nope it is not  :o

I just tested it and the thing is the normal size one is easier to handle, you recharge it with your thumb and that’s it, with this big one you need two hands or you have to press the back to somewhere while holding a soldering iron, it has strong spring too, so basically it’s pretty close to useless. It does suck better than the normal one but handling between each charge is not worth it…

So basically it sucks both ways, sucks good at soldering and sucks at handling  ;D

That's huge! If you can afford it, find a proper desoldering pump - I found a Hakko 808 for cheap on eBay a while back and love not having to deal with manual pumps any more..

The thing is I don’t like those, we have a huge Weller station at work with vacuum pump and soldering iron and whenever I grab the desoldering pump its dirty or the filter is not cleaned, that because of my co workers wont clean it after they finish but when I clean it and try to do a lot desoldering work it gets dirty pretty fast again.

My favor is still that small pump above and solder wick.

That desoldering pump is a cheap knock-off of the original Edsyn Soldapullt design and considered the standard size for through-hole components. The right tools for the right job.

Thanks for clearing thap up, i seen the original one now after you mentioned and a youtube video cracked me up with "Easy one hand handling" while she says that she push the pump with twoo hands in  ::)

It works quite good on components with both side soldered, because of its suction power indeed.

But it is for one hand operation. You turn it upside down and press the plunger down on the table or as I do it on my chest  ;).
Mind you, that hurts after a couple of DIL IC's...
IMHO the only manual sucker worth its money.

Yes . I press it against anything i can think of ...

On a side note , Goot appears to be the originator of it , not Edsyn , as i have seen from another forum thread .

Don't bash me if i'm wrong , i'm requoting .

I used to be quite the "speed demon" with one of these.  I had the trashcan next to my chair.  Suck the solder, press the plunger against my leg, stray solder bits fell into the trash can - repeat 64 times for those old, huge 64 pin (or more) DIP through hole ICs.

Brings back memories....

Yes, the copies are pure crap.  I bought one that fell apart after only a few uses.

My copy is still going STRONGGGGGGGGGGGG ........
Well if you are attempting to desolder a 64 pin chip ( i had one of those ! )
Switch your chisel tip to a 2.4mm/3mm , makes life easier being able to desolder 3 pins at one go .
