RIGOL DS1052E - RS232 port male chassis?
« on: July 26, 2017, 01:37:53 pm »
Hi all,

Does anybody have any idea why on earth the chassis part of the RS232 port on this oscilloscope is a male version, while all of the "normal" RS232 cables and USB-serial cables end in a male plug as well?

On the same note: when I find a female-female stub (pins connected one on one, straight over), wether this will work?

Kind regards,

Gerard

Hi all,

This does not have a RS232 port, it is a port for the digital TTL input/output as can be seen in here https://www.banggood.com/MHS-5200A-25MHz-Digital-DDS-Dual-channel-Signal-Generator-Source-Frequency-Meter-13N2-p-1041328.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc_elc&utm_campaign=ds-elc-rm&utm_content=mandy

Quite right, thanks. I was mistaking, the question should have been about the RIGOL DS1052E.  I bought them both in. the last few weeks and have been struggling with computer connection in both machines.

I will try to change the thread's title accordingly.

If the RS-232 port is male, this usually means you need a null modem cable (RX and TX wires reversed) to connect it to a computer. As to why that polarity, you would have to ask the designers. May be they were expecting driving other RS-232 peripherals from the scope?

If you want a USB connection, why not use the USB port?

If you want a USB connection, why not use the USB port?

Because I'm not sure these ports are functionally equivalent.

I would ultimately like to be able to communicate with the scope from MacOS in Python and have have up till now not been able to find drivers for it for Mac OS, not for RS232 nor for USB.
