Well, sooner or later it was going to get phased out... Now only the digital version is sold. |O

As they seem to still sell replacement parts for it if you really want a genuine FX-888 you can buy the pieces separately and put it together yourself... or get a 936 clone analogue base and genuine iron (wonder how well that would work...)

There are multiple people still selling the 888 on aliexpress.

Personally i would prefer the digital one if it used normal 900M tips. Sadly it doesnt.

though, would you trust aliexpress? I mean, it wouldn't surprise me if it was legit, nor would it surprise me if it was a fake, but eh, what of it, it's just a soldering iron.

I've had zero issues with aliexpress.
As long as you only buy from sellers with good feedback and many previous sales the risk is minimal in my opinion.

And for a $100 item its not the end of the world if you lose it.

A few years back i had the choice of buying my TIG welder from ebay or aliexpress (Aliexpress was 10% cheaper).
Since the welder cost quite a bit (US$600) I did decide to go with ebay just to play it safe.

Can anyone recommend me a decent soldering station (FX888 level) but which has a digital display and takes 900M tips.

I really need a new soldering station.

I have had no issues with Aliexpress either, I am just highlighting the possibility.
