That's a good article on the fallacies of droning, although I do think drones have many valid uses. I think the psychological implications come to bear when they become armed, although I'm not sure that's really it either. I live in Tucson where ther are A10 and F18s and even B2s flying all the time and I never fear them, they just are there doing what they do. But we're not in the front lines of a war, we don't have to worry that plane might open fire. I don't think any civilian population is going to easily accept armed vehicles flying overhead knowing they may open fire at any time - no matter if they are "drones" or manned.
