Trustworthy supplier of NEW EPROM memory for HP8563E
« on: December 30, 2023, 09:56:12 pm »
I'd like to download the firmware from my HP8563E Spectrum Analyser and reload it into a set of 6 new EPROM chips.
It uses 6 off AM27C020-120DC UV erasable EPROMS. As I'm assuming that the LABEL is are covering the UV window on each chip I will also either need 6 new labels or I'll need to carefully peel the originals off.
Is there a trustworthy source for these chips (NEW not used) either in China, Europe or anywhere else at a reasonable price? Also, is this firmware downloadable from anywhere just in case (I can post any details written on the labels later if needed)? Thanks.

I greatly doubt you'll find new ones.   You'll have to look for used ones on (e.g.) eBay.   I've bought a fair number of EPROMS on eBay and while I've had the occasional bad part in batch of (e.g.) 10, I've only ever had a fake part on eBay twice, and eBay refunded me on both occasions.

You'll need to remove the labels and use a UV eraser to blank them and a burner to programme them.   New labels to protect against incidental UV damage.

You can buy AT27C020-90PU parts brand new direct from Microchip for $5.45 each in the US.

https://www.microchip.com/en-us/product/at27c020#purchase-from-store

Or £4.36 from https://uk.farnell.com

These are plastic OTP parts, not ceramic UV erasable parts, but if the firmware version will never be updated at this point it's not like you would need to erase them and reprogram them again. Plus you never need to worry about labels falling off and exposing the UV windows to stray ambient UV light.

If you need rewritable instead of write-once: the AM27C020-120DC interface looks simple enough that a PCB with a parallel FRAM and voltage shifter might also be a substitute.  FRAM has data retention in the (expected) centuries and can be rewritten as easily as SRAM if you want to reprogram later.
