stripping tool for UT141 hardline?
« on: May 18, 2022, 07:22:57 pm »
Anybody know where to get a reasonably priced hand tool for cleanly stripping the solid outer copper jacket on UT141 hardline or semi-rigid coax? Or do you have a trick method using conventional tools?  Thanks!

the tubing cutters I've tried tend to reduce the ID a little at the cut, leaving a sharp burr pointing towards the center conductor.  Probably also creating an impedance bump.

If its anything like mineral insulated cable

you can knock up a "key" with a length of rod,  cut slot cut in one end and bend the other into a handle.

I didn't find anything to strip my coax, so I made a fixture for my dremel tool.  See pictures.  I used the plastic routing attachment that came with the tool and screwed on an aluminum assembly that supports the coax as I twist it.  Also shown is the resulting stripped coax.  It needs a little deburring with a needle file, but the result is pretty good.  It takes a few practice cuts to get the depth set right.
Pro tip: don't bend your coax before stripping it.

The ones I have seen used at work just look like miniature tubing cutters.   The bender looks like a miniature conduit bender.

I think what i saw was a metal jig with a carbide scribe that you rotate around the pipe, not a wheel. like a lathe cut.
