I think you're not exciting the horn antennas with the correct mode using the patch antennas on the board. It is definitely possible to excite a horn antenna using a patch as a microstrip to waveguide  transition (take a look at this paper https://www.hindawi.com/journals/ijap/2013/834314/). Since your a student my advice would be to model the patch and horn antenna in CST Studio or HFSS (maybe openEMS?) and run some parametric sweeps to try to nail down the best dimensions for the horn antenna. The radar module you're using has a very low output power and it's X band so running a good simulation will make sure that you're getting the best efficiency possible out of your system.

I have seen some HAMops modifying this module by fitting coax or SMA connectors.
By doung this you  might have less hassle withthe antennahorn.

You will have to get some hardline coax because of the high frequency.

You should look in to what hams are doing on theyr 3cm band because you will find a lot of interesting stuff there.

Fire91,

I just looked at the datasheet and application note for the HB100 as I’m not familiar with this module.
The module should have a range of 20meters without adding an antenna.

Did you use the IF amplifier as suggested in the application note?
