C Band Reception experts here?
« on: February 21, 2021, 03:59:45 am »
Hi
Today I get a lot of Cashback via Aliexpress and I just was looking for a C Band dish and I found that as the only one: https://de.aliexpress.com/item/32810348685.html
€ 336,77 with free shipping  :scared:. Is this a reasonable Price and Produkt?
I know I need the reception think (LNB or how the call) to. There are a ton of them avaiable.
There are some C Band Beams in sight:
https://ses-footprint-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/footprint_images/high_ses-5_east_hemi_c_band_beam_M.jpg
When I look into the SES Site: https://www.ses.com/our-coverage#/explore/search?type=network&q= there are many Sat who still broadcast.
So will that be a good purchase?  :-//

You'll need more than just a C-band LNB.
That dish looks fixed; only able to see one satellite.  Not sure if you can put a jack (linear actuator) on it.
See: https://ae01.alicdn.com/img/pb/488/371/470/470371488_194.jpg

You should first check if you can get free or paid programming.  See: https://www.lyngsat.com/
Then there's the set-top-box, and the dish mover (motor driver), and.........$

Do you know what you're getting yourself into?

I think the price is OK for a C band dish if you want that but the rest of the system will be expensive

That looks like a good design but keep in mind the positioner and supports need to be very sturdy because of snow and wind on such a big structure. I would say you should get a old dishnet sat to play around with first because its going to be 1/10 the cost for that system. not sure how it works in EU. I would imagine Austria is pretty extreme for dishes because of the snow (you have pointy roofs right?)

But you are in a favorable location for C band, like you can actually get useful stuff in europe I think.. in the USA its trash. I thought about doing it but I looked at the available channels and just totally lost interest.

I would have to live on a small island or something to justify using it as a backup

it can damage motors and brackets and stuff if its too light is what i mean

not sure if the china designers had snow load in mind. that one is OK but others are built for wind resistance and made with mesh. Keep in mind full metal = heavier = more money for positioner.

oh sadly that noone elese replay to my Tread.
I want to move the Antenna only manually. Maybe there is a way to move the Receiver not the Dish like some huge Dish. I want use the dish mainly for "research" only to find some interesting channels.
So in the case the Antenna get Snow on Dish the will melt after some Days if not I will have other problems.  :-DD

I think the price is OK because there is specialized equipment that made it

usually I think they are spun, so you can't exactly get a better deal unless someone has a metal spinning lathe. maybe india. or find a local ad for someone that does not want their system anymore

I don't know how thin you can make it before it gets floppy, I think thinner might be better for hand positioning because it might be a little heavy.

What I would look at is thickness of metal, quality of paint job (important), how well it conforms to the parabola it was made to follow. hard to tell from a alibaba post. I want to say some kind of research grade other country making them would charge 800-2000$. I would still recommend one that breaks down and is made of mesh because its easier to setup, safer to position, possible to store away and resell easily without shenanigans. That ebay guy is a little lazy with his local pickup, he could do it.

Here is a deal that I would consider if I was doing it personally (not a fan of alibaba)
