Weller Wx1012 US model in Europe
« on: October 23, 2013, 11:47:01 am »
Hi is there someone who has the weller wx soldering station who can check if the transformer has a 240volt primary winding, so it can be used in Europe ?

Thanks

I've never seen Weller use multiple primaries to handle different voltage standards (they've all been region specific, so the transformer would have to be swapped).

That said, is there a particular reason you're not able/willing to use a suitably sized step down transformer to get it to work?

I ask, as a 300W step down isn't that expensive.  :-//

You could try and replace the transformer in the unit, but I'm not sure if that will be cost effective. I suspect the step-down would be both easier and less expensive, particularly if you get the replacement transformer from Weller (not exactly inexpensive on replacement parts these days).

Maybe put the step-down on a shelf or the floor to save from using bench space?

If they have normal transformers , then buy two units and put them in series. If thats too expensive buy one in your local shop.

Sadly it wouldn't fit, as it's just too tight in there. WX series uses a toroidal transformer, and there's a board directly on top of ~ 1/3 of it. Second board is attached to the interface that makes up the front panel.

About 1:50 into the video and you'll see what I mean.

That's not what I meant, I meant he should buy two Weller 115V stations and put those in series  ;)
