Metcal MX PS5000 issue
« on: December 26, 2021, 09:08:32 am »
Hi All,
newbie here, bought a used Metcal MX-PS5000 after getting sick of the cheap all in one wand unit I'd been using.  I decided I want to learn more about repairing stuff.
The used main unit came with nothing else so I bought a brand new MX-H1-AV and two new original Metcal tips.
When I turn it on I get the first screen pop up telling me its version 1.22 firmware, nice.
Then I get a screen with the word Power and an arrow moving across towards the right and power says 00.
It does that no matter if I use the wand in the left or right port. Tip does not get hot.
I did a factory reset (hold onto the button while you switch on the unit and navigate through the menu).
I'm hoping its something I've done that is silly and not a repair required to the unit.
thanks in advance.

This may help, read the comments as well. Don't take their word for correct replacement parts etc. Double check all of that yourself.

Shock's link describes exactly what you are seeing so hopefully that fixes it.

Did you buy it as working or for repairs? If it was ebay and bought as working (used), then seller listed it incorrectly.

I was going to mention that, it probably was thrashed before you got it anyway. Perhaps seek a partial refund and see if they play ball. As you already have the new handle repairing might be the best option.

thanks for the link. It was (cleverly) tagged as unknown condition  |O
Will pull it and start to have a look. From the link some of the components are no longer current so will have to follow their lead and look for alternatives.

What condition category did the Ebay listing say?

Used: An item that has been used previously. The item may have some signs of cosmetic wear, but is fully operational and functions as intended.
For parts or not working: An item that does not function as intended and is not fully operational.

If it was "Used" find the item in your history and select return and doesn't work or defective. Tell them the problem "Turns on but won't heat brand new iron/tip". Say you are "Willing to accept a partial refund of $XX which should cover repair costs". Attach a photo of it plugged in not burning your fingers and a photo of your receipt showing that the iron and tips are new.

This is all just basic ebay stuff. My last post tells you exactly how to ask for a partial refund. Pick a fair amount and if he gives you a hard time or stalls escalate it to ebay. Just give him a week or so to respond, if you don't hear back then escalate it anyway.

To incorrectly list the item and then add caveats like "not tested" is a well known trick to sellers. You won't need to return it even if he refuses to offer a partial refund. If ebay saw this in almost all cases they would side with you.

just to tidy the end of this topic up (belatedly).
Units with this issue seems to be toast or at least a reasonably difficult repair and trying to find spares.
The seller did take it back (thankfully).
So I bought another one also on ebay and its completely functional.
Thanks for those with input.
