Microscope stand
« on: July 13, 2020, 12:51:25 pm »
This is about a microscope stand that is
- stable
- does not need much space on desk (L=210mm boom)

A 15mm granite base will complete this stand in about two weeks.
See current state with chipboard as stopgap for granite base: 1022410-0

Years ago, I picked up a nice optical dissecting scope for free.  Of course, a stable stand is needed.  I use the one it came with.

If you do not have wide-field oculars (often labeled WF), they help a lot.  If you need to wear glasses, they are virtually essential, but even if you don't, they make using the scope more comfortable.

@jpanhalt: Great you found a suitable microscope with stable stand!
Some low cost microscopes used for electronics work got quite unstable stands https://youtu.be/B0wRdJRzPUI?t=363 - what made me think about an alternative.

The 40x30cm granite base ready!

I'm happy, the stand is - let's say rock solid.

I bought a square of hot rolled steel which I have been meaning to use as the base for a microscope stand. It may be much more dense, but even after descaling and painting it will not look nearly as nice as yours. Your stand has encouraged me to finish mine. Thank you!

Go ahead jfiresto, curious to see your steel plate!

I will post a picture when it is done. The stand is mostly design-by-DIN. The parts are supposed to come next week.
