Review of Banggood 2600 piece thru-hole resistor assortment
« on: October 11, 2016, 05:01:15 am »
I'm a longtime viewer and reader of eevblog, but just joined the forum, and this is my first review.  The resistor assortment I'm reviewing I bought from Banggood, but I've seen what looks like the same assortment from other vendors on eBay and Amazon for similar prices.  There's also a 3120 piece assortment for slightly more that I didn't buy, but might be an even better value.  Here's the link to the product I'm reviewing:

http://www.banggood.com/2600Pcs-130-Values-14W-0_25W-1-Metal-Film-Resistors-Assorted-Pack-Kit-Set-p-1022870.html

What interested me was the promise of getting a lot of resistors for a cheap price: twenty each of 130 values of 1/4 watt 1% metal film resistors from 1 ohm to 3 Meg (2600 total resistors) for $11.12, including shipping from China.  Since it was so inexpensive, I didn't know exactly what to expect.  Here are my observations:

* Shipping time was reasonable, considering it came from China: about two to three weeks to West Coast of US.

* The 130-value assortment was supposed to include most E24 values from 1 ohm to 1 Meg, plus 1.5 Meg, 2 Meg, and 3 Meg.  And, that's basically what I got, with a few exceptions: It was missing the 1k, 330k, and 510k resistors.  However, I got  double the quantity of resistors for 360k, 430k, and 560k.  Considering the price, I wasn't too upset, and didn't bother requesting replacements for the missing values.

* Resistors came with the paper tape from the spool attached, and the tape was labelled with the resistance value.  However, the 180 ohm resistors were labelled as 220 ohms on the paper tape (although the color bands were correct).  I can't say other resistors weren't mislabeled, as I didn't check them all (I did check the resistors I got double quantities of).

* Similar to other inexpensive resistors, the leads are quite a bit thinner than you would get with a high quality resistor, which makes them less breadboard friendly, although certainly usable.  I haven't yet tried soldering them.

* Tolerance is described as 1%.  I sampled about 20 resistors across the range (using a DER EE DE-5000 LCR meter and a Fluke 8025B multi-meter), and most were within tolerance.  Two or three were between 1% and 2% off, and one was between 2% and 3% off.  Not perfect, but fine for my purposes.

I was a little disappointed with the missing values, but considering the price, I'm satisfied with the purchase, overall, and would consider buying this or something similar in the future.

Welcome to the forum, Dan. Thanks for the review. I saw these recently as well and it's good to hear some first-hand experience with them.

In my experience Banggood will replace any missing items almost no-questions asked. Very responsive company.

(I purchased a component tester and got a broken screen which was replaced promptly at no cost to me).

My eBay experiences with 1% metal film resistors.
12$ with shipping.
Looked just like the ones from opening post.

Thanks, Brutte. Your results are generally what I'd expect in that if the market is willing to buy factory rejects, then such rejects will be made available for purchase, not thrown away. Of course, not disclosing how far out of spec they are is undesirable, but not surprising either. The magnitude of the temp. co. was surprising.

I could see using these for general tinkering since the tolerance is fine (ignoring what's written on the tin, so to speak) and room temperature isn't going to go from 0 to 50C on a regular basis.
