Here's a couple of pics. The board with the part removed and the new part (unsoldered). Anyone see an improvement in the new part? Compare it to the old part in the first post. The new part has spot welds along the seam on the connector housing. Some factory out there realizes the problem.
I told my friends I could teach them to be funny, but they all just laughed at me.

In a thread on geekhack about the Cooler Master Novatouch keyboard, a commercial from CM said that they dropped the mini-USB connector for a micro because it was more robust. But this keyboard also use a 90° cable, perhaps a part of the solution.

Oh, do they crack at that point?, i guess i'm too careful with my equipment, newer seen that, only where the connector itself is getting ripped of the pcb

Can you post up the part?  I'm not being difficult.  I just searched before and didn't come up with anything.

I am using this one and treat it as a standard SMD part with reflow only soldering.

You can see the footprint here. It has plated holes also in the two small pads that are not through hole for extra rigidity.

Oh yea - they come apart where the little jigsaw pieces fit together when a kid gets hold of it when the charge cord is attached.

Oh yea.  :palm:

Looks like they should be spot welding it together

I've been looking for a better part like the one you're using. Can you provide a link, or the part number and manufacturer?

I never cared for ether the mini or micro USB connector both of them seem to me to be mechanically engineered to a cost, a very low cost. I am going to have to get some of those low profile right angle cables, those are really what this consumer electronics stuff should be shipping with.

Ha.. seriously.. Getting the connector soldered right is a pain in itself, but fixing the torn off traces tends to be micro-surgery.

LOL. Anyway - It's soldered on now and working well. Brother is happy.

Another job well done.
