48Mpx is certainly a fake spec (and overkill if true) and I'm not sure if 4K isn't overkill on such a small sensor too. Besides, specs at the bottom say that it's 1080p only and uses JPG compression in USB mode which presumably means it doesn't even support SuperSpeed. For USB use I think there are better and cheaper cameras out there, but maybe you want to use HDMI or microSD recording...

Basic math: 1/2.8" sensor size, 2.9 um pixels - see datasheet of this one for example https://www.sony-semicon.com/files/62/flyer_security/IMX290_178_226_Flyer.pdf
Might be a 2 MP sensor, which would be fine. 48 MP are either completely fake or just interpolated.

48MP sensor here: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Sony-IMX586-Comparison-Review-Five-48-MP-smartphones-face-off-in-a-camera-duel.428434.0.html
But yes it does seem to match the IMX290 spec as you linked, so that spec is clearly a lie.

Other sellers have the same item for ~$75: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256806035034444.html and also other cams which claim to tell you what sensor is used in them (IMX307, IMX415, IMX678).
I would probably want to see a review before purchasing any of those.

AliExpress cameras (and everything, frankly :P) are a big mess. Specifications are often very sparse or conflicting. Some are completely nonsensical, like aforementioned 48Mpx.

I have a strong suspicion that there exist HighSpeed (USB 2.0 generation) cameras with USB 3.0 connectors. They look like USB 3.0 externally and may be advertised as such, but detailed specs indicate that higher resolution modes only work in MJPG or at pathetically slow frame rate (1~2 fps) - typical of USB 2.0 cameras.

I am actually looking for something decent too, and... |O

If it just needs to be decent, I've had no issues with these:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32899919461.html IMX334
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004675631480.html IMX307 + autofocus

Lapsun gets mentioned here sometimes as well: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256803143996474.html IMX377

Hello,

https://www.theimagingsource.com/en-us/product/zoom-autofocus/afu/dfkafu420l62/
7,716×5,360 (41.4 MP), up to 110 fps

I wanted to get this instead, as I have the lens for it, https://www.opto-e.com/en/products/mc03-03x-serie

The camera cost is 600Eur is not easy to buy, the lens I have also was about 600Eur
I bought the lens 4years ago and waited to get decent camera because largest sensor to fit for this lens is 2/3”
So Sony IMX226 was 12MP the most MP sensor I could fit, and it is very low megapixel count. Sony IMX226 cost is also 500Eur or so.

This DFK AFU420-L62 is the exact size sensor as my LENS can handle. Yet sensor is some old outdated not backlit like sony starvis IMX226. Can't tell exact model because manufacturer Imaging Source refuses to tell me.

2/3" and 1/2.3" is a fairly significant difference in field of view.

There is no need for crazy megapixel count on a small sensor because diffraction in the lens limits resolution anyway. Working aperture of f/6-8 at low magnifications means that two points of light separated 4μ on the sensor are blurred enough to be almost inseparable, even with sharpening. The fairly common pixel pitch of ~2μ is a point of diminishing returns.

At high magnification and f/10-20 aperture the image will be even less sharp.

Well, I only care about USB and don't like widescreen very much (poor fit to image circle of lenses) so there are cheaper options of similar utility (to me) out there.

Speaking of Eakins, their item 1005005949420173 looks interesting: 20MP on 1" sensor with 2.4μ (my math) pixel pitch, at a moderate price.
Unfortunately no mention of its YUV capabilities (if any :-//) and I have some poor experience with webcam MJPEG encoders...

I've been curious, do these have a universal fit?

I have a no name microscope (or the name has been removed somehow) that I acquired. Sometimes if I care to take a picture, I try using my iPhone camera, however, I spend a great deal of time trying to aim it.

Something that would mount to my existing microscope lens would be great, but not sure if it too would have difficulty focusing. Usually the focusing is due to moving the phone a mm and suddenly I lose the image.

You need to measure your microscope. There are various sizes for eyepieces and trinocular ports, although some are somewhat standard (23.3mm, 30mm).
You can also look at options like: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:431168

I have purchased a handful of microscopes, some with third camera port, have never seen those used. Phone camera shots through the eyepiece are so much more convenient.
Some time ago, I 3D printed a phone holder you can slip onto the eypiece. Doesn't work anymore since I have a new phone. At some place I saw they had made an adjustable phone holder you could flip over the eyepiece, also worked well.
The version linked by thm_w looks super ugly, but will do the job. Aliexpress also has some models, all look cheap and flimsy however. Best design your own. A simple spacer tube is already a good start.
