Bad chinese GU10 5W Led lamb
« on: December 29, 2015, 07:42:35 pm »
I got 10 pcs of these GU10 down lights from Ebay. One did blow up when power was applied 230vac. One lamp had bad led unit.
Soldering quality is shittiest what i have ever seen. No name brand CE is missing so factory is not responsible stupid me. :)

I bet if you look VERY closely, those aren't even CREE LEDs but instead Lattice Bright knockoffs. They look very similar to CREEs including having the same part number, but there are small subtle differences.

I have a drawer full of "10W" ones which look exactly the same.

The LEDs have survived so at some point I plan on using them for the fish tank, or maybe the bench.

BBC Watchdog had a piece on some cheap GU10 LED lights that exceeded both the voltage and current limits that were present on the external metal heatsink. Sometimes it pays to buy a branded item from a dealer as there appear to be some really iffy LED lights coming out of China at the moment.

Just noticed this threads title....... GU10 5W Led lamb...... Does it have its own insulating fleece and baa when switched on :)

CE on chinese LED lamps mean "Certain Electrocution" anyway.
I had to order three different type, to get one usable. Not worth it IMHO. The bad is: even brand ones are getting worse and worse.

12V versions are not bad though, though they do benefit from throwing the nasty heatsink away ( or using it to cool a 3W lamp and ballast) and mounting the active parts on a larger heatsink. Currently using one, sold as a 9W unit, as an uplighter, and the LED just reaches 50C, while in the original case it was running over 90C.
