Would you pay $95 for a part ID?
« on: May 08, 2022, 01:18:39 pm »
An electronics store is offering a part finding service, no doubt to help people keep old equipment limping along. Is it worth it to you? Maybe its nearly impossible to figure out what a part is?

They'll keep US$ 25 if they can't identify the component. We have a thread for this, and it's free: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/what_s-this-please-(component-advice)/

A small but significant percentage of parts are not easy to identify. If I was a parts seller I'd just identify any I knew.. I would only charge in a really rare case when I had to spend a serious amount of time figuring it out.

The AVR Transistor Tester is very useful with many parts.. figuring out what they are...Its a fun challenge.. tools too..

Some cable TV show (This Old House) has a humorous tool identification game.. I have some of these inexplicable tools..

I certainly wouldn't. How could it be any better than just posting a picture of it on this forum?
