How many MIPSM in your bench?
« on: March 03, 2014, 07:36:56 pm »
I got some new bench top matting (see Buy/Sell/Wanted) and Dave just did a video on his new mat and his rejuvenated bench and I thought we really need a metric besides the size of the bench.

I propose a new metric.  The MIPSM, pronounced mip rhymes with pip and sm like sim, mipsim. The MIPSM is the Monthly Income Per Square Meter*.  To calculate the MIPSM for your bench :

(Income per month)/(bench top area in m2)

$3000/1.39m2
2158MIPSM

My bench operates at 0 MIPSM but can only go up from here (I believe).

No need to get complicated about how much the equipment cost that adorns the bench or shelving, etc.

*for sq. ft. multiply sq. ft. by 0.09290304 to get sq. meters.

@zapta, I think it should be what's earned on/from the bench. But it's open for discussion.

@rdl, know what you mean, but think that it can only go negative if the project that was supposed to profit didn't.

If so, it is zero for me (and I have a small bench).

For a professional it had better be positive. If a hobbyist isn't usually negative then maybe he/she should consider turning professional.

When the hobbyist's MIPSM goes positive the hobbyist goes pro!

I may qualify for MIPSM eco credits as I have an air ionizer over my bench.   That's got to count for something!

Depends on if you're carbon neutral or not.*

*Definition: carbon neutral -- being agnostic about where and what you eat to maintain your carbon-based life form.  Note: If you're alient to Earth it might be silicon neutral.

I am a carbon based alpha male on beta blockers and I contribute copious amounts of inflammable gases back into the atmosphere.

Funny story on that. I was at a restaurant one time and felt it was time to "contribute" back some stored energy back into the atmosphere. Figured I would be sly and disquise the "contributions" by releasing it in sync with the music playing in the background. Then I saw others looking at me funny and realized ...

There was no music playing in the background.

I was listening to my IPod !!  :scared:
