Grandma's FM radio with RDS
« on: January 15, 2016, 11:20:19 pm »
Hello, which fm radio with RDS do you prefer? Grundig Music 81 or Panasonic RF-U300? I prefer the Panasonic, but it has no lcd backlight and you need six LR14 1,5V cells for stations memory backup.  :palm:
I want the radio to be usable for 80+ years old people. They are able to use a common LCD TV set. No Alzheimer disease has appeared.

Depends very much on the 80 year old in question! My mother is approaching 80 and is quite rational and able to figure things out for herself, however, she is afraid of "breaking" technological stuff. Rotating volume controls and tuning are ok; push-buttons and menus (i.e. anything with a hint of built-in intelligence) are definitely not ok. That's probably not much help!

Knobs and switches with single, labelled function are ok.
Anything that requires the grandkids to fathom it is not ok :)

So I bought the Panasonic RF-U300 but I hat to do a hack described here. http://nice.kaze.com/rf-u350_no2.html
I soldered the D905 diode to its position. I wonder why the manufacturer left it empty. Any opinions? Do they place D905 only for Japanese market or something?

Now there is memory and clock backup even if the ac cord is plugged into the radio.
