Hakko FM-203 & FM-2024 Setup
« on: October 07, 2013, 12:36:35 am »
I recently upgraded my 3 set of Soldering/Desolding tools..

First a plug in, then a Weller adj, then a circuit specialties dual solder/desolder which died, then a mcm unit.. loved them all, but figured i would since upgrade.. Someone gave me a ikon fx1? soldering station and got spoiled over the fact it heated up super fast & had an idle timer.

I ended up buying the FM-203 and FM-2024 Unit , and various tips for it, i would have to say, hands down this is a very nice setup, works very well, i like the fact you can pop off the tips, and change to a different sides very quickly, and effortlessly, the setup has very good temperature stability and I am very pleased with the setup. I am not sure i can ever go back to another unit. I have used it to do SMT work, and though hole work without issue., large tip size doesn't have a problem melting large solder pads for desoldering, i was able to also remove DIP-40 packaged from a Dual layer board very easy ( instead of clipping the legs and pulling a leg out at a time )

Caveats.. The FM-2024 Station require pressurized air to function, it does not have a "Vacuum" pump integrated into it, i am currently using a small 2 stage air brush compressor with a small reservoir can, works great!

I also have a FX-901 handheld Soldering iron that runs on 4 AA batteries, has a good weight, but have not given it a test yet, i will post after i have..

any questions feel free to ask, and i will give my best opinion/answer :)

Hi,

just a little warning:

Neverever(!!) remove the headphone-jack on the holder when the station is turned on. I killed my FM206 with this. :-BROKE
Maybe this one is designed better, but be careful.

I'm setting up my FM-2024 and have the same question as below - do you contact to an air compressor (as the instructions suggest) or a vacuum pump (which would make more sense!).

Yes you follow the instructions: " the Desoldering Control Module also requires shop/compressed air"

I am using a California Air Model #2010A compressor

Wow, that's a scary thought! Was there any mention of this in the manual? I have an FM-203 running the FM-2027 & FM-2030 (HD) irons, so I occasionally move the iron holders around on the bench, depending on which I'm using. And the connecting cable doesn't use a locking plug...

I been using a Dual 203 / C1492 Setup for a few years I really like it. Switching my main station over to JBC will demote the Hakko to back up / second bench. No issues unplugging the sleep while hot do it all the time on the 203.

Thoughts on your reasoning to switch? I am not sure i can afford to abandon my Hakko Station.

maybe i can use it to offset my twitch income lol.. 5 year business loss lol.

really do like the looks of the JBC DDSE-1QD

I noticed the JBC has its own internal pump, reducing the reliance on shop air.

I've found that the JBC product line is very reliable. I've had this desoldering unit forever, and for small diameter work the original tip it came with is still perfect :)
