Rock 2 30W USB-C Quick Charge / USBPD charger
« on: November 16, 2019, 11:44:12 pm »

Specs:
USB-A output: 4.5V-5A, 5V-4.5A, 9V-3A, 12V-2.5A
Type-C output: 5V-3A, 9V-3A, 12V-2.5A, 15V-2A, 20V-1.5A

Protocols:
- USB PD 30W
- QC3, QC4 30W
- Huawei SCP/FCP 20W

Parts:
- SW3516 controller
- 3x 22uF 400V 105C Richcap RK
- 1x FCON SCA 470uF 25V
- 2x ABS210 2A rectifier (why two in paralell??)
- 2x 14N04ST FET (should be 42V 14A)
- 3.1A fuse + PTC

They claim "two intelligent chips" but I can only see the one QFN on the top.
The main chip can measure: voltage, current, and temperature (6mV, 2.5mA resolution) and control voltage in 0.2V steps.

Clearance between L and N isn't great (see BD1), but primary - secondary clearance is very good.

Measured minimum voltage: 3.6V
Measured maximum voltage: 12V so far (it should do 20.5V, but I need to investigate the library I used)

For $15 its great value.
But I still need to: get it to output 20V, and measure ripple, maximum current outputs.

I hate things of this kind with built in power pins. They often just fall out of the wall (or travel adapter) as they are too heavy, or they obscure other sockets of a multi-way adapter. Why cant manufacturers just put a standard power cable connector on them? This also allows different cables for different countries to be readily used.

I'd also note that devices that provide full 100W PD are now on the market for not too much more. E.g.

Update:
I've received a RD TC66 USB tester. USB-PD works at 15 and 20V as expected.
But QC2 or 3 still do not work above 12V. Which is odd because the datasheet for the SW3516 specifically calls out that it supports these protocols:

Quote
9.5 QC fast charge
SW3516 integrates QC fast charge protocol, supports QC4 + / QC4 / QC3.0 / QC2.0, and supports Class A / Class B. QC2.0 output support 5V / 9V / 12V / 20V. QC3.0 output supports 3.6V ~ 20V, 200mV / Step.

I can't see anything in the datasheet that would let you configure the chip to disable these modes, so I'm quite stumped as to how PD 20V can work but QC2 20V does not.

There is also PE mode which might be worth looking into:
Quote
PE fast charge SW3516 integrates PE2.0 and PE1.1 fast charge protocols. PE2.0 output supports 5V ~ 20V, 500mV / Step. PE1.1 output support5V / 7V / 9V / 12V.

But the protocol is completely different, its using "vbus current modulation" compared to varying D+ and D- voltages:
