Ikea / DIY Equipment / project bins trolley 'project'
« on: October 10, 2015, 11:20:47 pm »
I had some space under my desk which I didn't use very efficiently. I had the idea to get some kind of trolley to store equipment and project bins. After some thinking and looking around I came up with this:

It is made from an IKEA Omar shelving system, Ikea Rill wheels and some aluminium L profile. The aluminium frame is just there to keep  the wheels in place. The weight of the shelving system is to be supported by the wheels:

Ofcourse the shelving is too high to fit under the desk. Fortunately the legs are easy to cut using a pipe cutter:

See if it fits:

Rant:
All in all it took longer to buy everything at IKEA than putting it together. I really hate going to the IKEA store because you have to walk through the entire friggin shop to buy something. And all those people blocking the path gazing at what crap they may or may not buy. Hey! There is someone behind you who wants to get on with his life! IKEA's webshop also sucks because it takes several weeks to deliver otherwise I would definitely go that route.

Nice use of "under" space!

As for Ikea, I hate it too, but there are maps and cut throughs. The problem is, when my wife goes to Ikea, she needs to look at the whole store. Fortunately, she often has a friend who likes to go, so I don't have to.

I actually had to go through the entire shop twice because they had hidden the wheels somewhere in the storage department  :palm:
By the way: In Dutch IKEA can be an acronym for 'everbody buys garbage over there'  (for the Dutch speaking crowd: Iedereen Koopt Er Afval). My youngest son came up with that.

Very nice and neat job....... :-+

I have storage racking in the garage and workshop and the best thing I have done of late was to splash out on 40 big stackable plastic bins with both lids and wheels, fortunately they were down from $13 to $7 so I went nuts.

Previously everything was in cardboard boxes stacked two high on every shelf and after time the boxes fall apart and everything inside them gets full of dust as well as being a haven for things that crawl, I've dropped boxes full of stuff from height onto concrete before because of this. Anyway now it's all organised with labels to identify each bins contents and they seem to be keeping everything dry, dust and creepy thing free.

Also just to finish I have a collection of Ridgid pipe cutters (job perk) and see those indent rings on the steel tube in the above picture I needed to replicate that on some flared copper tube for some fuel jiggler syphons I was making, so I made a radius edge blade on the lathe to put in the pipe cutters and it worked a treat, a ground washer would have done but I ended up with 100 meters of clear fuel rated hose and am making jigglers for my tight arse budget conscious mates.

Best Regards

Muttley

I used to have cardboard boxes as well but Silver fish love them. Even >3 liters of pesticide wasn't enough to get rid of all of them so I try to cut their food supply!
