Hakko 888 110V soldering iron on 240V
« on: October 10, 2015, 01:56:03 pm »
Hello, for those interested in running a Hakko 888 110V on a 240V line without replacing the transformer this is how I did it:

- remove the ZNR
- put a 8µF 400V X class cap in series with the primary of the transformer
- put a 100Kohms bleed resistor across the cap

It's working fine for me. Little power wasted and the cap can go in the housing on top of the transformer.

Modifications at your own risks obviously.

I suspect the waveform going into the transformer (and also out) will be severely distorted.

When it is not heating it is indeed not pretty.

The PM97 black and white scope is on the primary. The RIGOL on the secondary. When it looks sinusoidal it is heating.

I could put a a load resistor on the secondary. Do you think it matters ?
