Interesting device.

I vote to put it on e-bay for x weeks at $1000 :D

If it doesn't sell, crack it.

I like your teardown videos.

I'm happy if you crack it, but then again it's not my money.

Was this piece of apparatus heavy?

Don't crack it. It's bad for the environment. Sell it! :D

The Vidicon is likely to be scrap BUT I personally don't like smashing vacuum tubes...they are works of art ! A tube collector may be interested as you say and there won't be much of interest in a fibre bundle intensifier module. A google on the technology will show what 'lives' inside....not the most exciting component but excellent when it is working well. I have worked on EEV 'HOT Gen3' image intensifiers that operate in starlight and they can provide truly amazing images in what appears total darkness to the human eye.

Sell it to someone who would value it. There is a fine line between dissassembly for learning, and vandalism  ;)  But its your toy....so if you think people will learn from seeing the inside of a Vidicon and I.I. tube....dismantle it.

Take a look here for what lives inside:

and a video of the operation here:

Almost 2 years ago someone was looking for this tube...
http://www.justanswer.com/video-camera-repair/3jx4o-idea-rca-4804-p2-sit-tube.html

Here's the datasheet...
http://tubedata.tubes.se/sheets/049/4/4804.pdf

I say try getting it working first, then selling, then crack it open, in that order.

This tube looks to be a very specialist (read rare as hens teeth) item.

My suggestion. Sell it to someone who really needs it, and buy a cheap old vidicon camera to disect so that people can see what lives inside a vidicon tube. Vidicons are cheap as chips and common ones are virtually without value as they often have burnt in images on their target. As I have stated, the intensifier section is nothing amazing inside the casing.

Sell it, if you want a Vidicon to open ( they are not exciting inside, basically they are a mono CRT element gun, with a faceplate that is photoconductive and with a collector electrode) I have done some that were old scrapped units. Get an old TV camera assembly, it will have better optics and nice beam splitters.
